INS Vikrant – Pride of India

Today is a proud & historic moment for every Indian as India formally inducts the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. It’s historic because Vikrant is the first aircraft carrier designed and built indigenous. An Aircraft carrier is unlike any other ship. It is a floating military airfield and considered as the pinnacle of Naval engineering. Vikrant has been designed by Indian Navy's inhouse Directorate of Naval Design (DND) now to be called Warship Design Bureau and built by CSL, a Public Sector Shipyard at an overall cost of close to Rs. 20,000 Crs. The ship's keel was laid in February 2009, followed by launching in Aug 2013. With an overall indigenous content of 76%, IAC is a perfect example of the nation's quest for "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat”. With the delivery of Vikrant, India has joined a select group of nations having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier.

INS Vikrant Capability

On this occasion, we planned to make a special video on Vikrant. The 262 mtr long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes.

The ship would be capable of operating air wing consisting of 30 aircraft comprising of MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) (Navy). Using a novel aircraft-operation mode known as STOBAR (Short Take- Off but Arrested Landing), the IAC is equipped with a ski- jump for launching aircraft, and a set of 'arrester wires' for their recovery onboard.

Firepower of Vikrant

Taking about the fire power of Vikrant, the warship has two 32 cell VLS (Vertical Launch System), capable of firing 64 missiles in total. It is equipped with the Israeli Barak 1 surface to air missile for short range and the Barak 8 for long range defence against aerial targets including fighters, helicopters, drones and missiles. It also has 4 × Otobreda 76 mm dual purpose cannons & 4 × AK-630 Close In Weapon System.

The ship's combat management system (CMS) was developed by Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division in collaboration with Weapon and Electronics System Engineering Establishment and MARS, Russia. It is the first CMS developed by a private company for the Indian Navy.

Electronic Warfare capability

INS Vikrant is equipped with Israeli ELTA MF Star Radar and Italian Selex RAN-40L radar. MF Star is capable of tracking both air and surface targets with 360-degree coverage and provides fire control guidance to active and semi active Surface-to-air missiles and Anti-ship missiles. MF-Start can detect sea skimming missiles at a range greater than 25KM and aircrafts from 450KM.

The RAN-40L is a 3D Long Range Early Warning AESA Radar. It ensures detection of aircraft up to 400km and a minimum range of 180m. The antenna rotates at 6 or 12 rpm providing 360° azimuth coverage.

These two radars gives Vikrant an edge over enemy in terms of early warning and detection.

INS Vikrant features Shakti EW Suite developed indigenously by DRDO for the interception, detection, classification, identification and jamming of conventional and modern Radars. The Shakti EW system will provide an electronic layer of defence against modern radars and anti-ship missiles to ensure electronic dominance and survivability in the maritime battlefield. It can jam the incoming RF missiles rendering them useless.

The system has been integrated with the wideband Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and Electronic Counter Measure (ECM) for the defence against missile attacks. The ESM of the system helps in finding accurate direction and interception of modern radars. The system has a built-in radar fingerprinting and data recording replay feature for post-mission analysis.

The commissioning of INS Vikrant would bolster India's position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and its quest for a blue water Navy. INS Vikrant, once fully combat-ready by mid-2023, will a vital role in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
