Ain’t Done Nothin’ if You Ain’t Been Called a Red, Maybe not as popular as “Solidarity Forever” or “The Red Flag”, but this one is still a glorious left-wing anthem of the Western world. American socialist and/or communist music has long been a very interesting and very overlooked topic. And maybe both of these traits can be attributed to its…peculiarity? We’ve seen the Soviet-style hundred-man chorus and the GDR German opera, but communist country folk song? Probably not so much. But in the end it’s still glorious, glorious in its own all-American way.

The American folk music revival during the early half of the 20th century was infused with a very strong sense of left-wing rebel sentiment—it was basically the 1940s version of rock ’n’ roll, but other than hippies you also had unionists, socialists, social democrats, communists and anarchists and all their crazy stuff. Just like how democratic sentiment was being suppressed in the USSR, left-wing culture was also hit hard by the U.S. government. The American public, on the other hand, was also deeply ensconced in a society of classical capitalism, consumerism and racism, and was tepid (to say the least) to far-left ideologies. The Red Scare round one and two, the House Un-American Activities Committee, McCarthyism…the list goes. Bascially the American socialists had it bad, and when hundreds of your members were being deported by Palmer and your entire organization forced to go underground, it was kind of hard to set up an Alexandrov-style ensemble. So it was only natural that the Americans turned to the most humble and anonymous form of music—folk music, the people’s music. With prominent figures like Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie, casual themes and lyrics in familiar vernacular and catchy tunes easy for everyone to pick up and further-improvise, the American folk song may be a peculiar but still proud member of the international left-wing music family.

And yes this audio is from Rebel Voices: Songs of the Industrial Workers of the World. I tried REALLY hard to find some other versions but there simply isn't anything good, in the end it's not a famous song, which is a shame 'cause I personally think it's really good.

LYRICS
(I don't think I need English lyrics for this one)
