Mozart, viennese Sonatina No.5, K 439b (Katsaris)

These six sonatinas first appeared in print in 1808 by Artaria, Vienna's first major music publishing house. They are arrangements of Mozart's five Divertimentos for three basset horn, K.Anh.229/439b, written in 1783. As of now, the arranger of these pieces is unidentified, but Austrian composer Ferdinand Kauer is a likely candidate. The notable changes in the sonatinas compared to the original are the following:

-The order of movements is different.
-Some of the trios have been exchanged with others on the set.
-Some movements have their key changed.
-Some movements using sonata form have a shortened recapitulation.
-The voice leading has been made more suitable for the piano.

Today, piano teachers use these sonatinas as intermediate piano music. Virtuoso pianist Cyprien Katsaris was the first to record the entire set of sonatinas in the 1990s.


(0:06) MVT 1, Adagio (arranged from Diventindo IV mvt 2)
(0:06) - A: a relaxing melody in F major with the bass and tenor supporting it.
(1:04) - B: a development of the material in A
(1:34) - A: after a retransition the A section returns.
(2:59) - Codetta: Four measures of closing material.

(3:13) MVT 2, MENUETTO, Allegro (arranged from Diventindo III mvt 2)
(3:13) - A: two seven bar phrases, the first ends in C major, the second in G major.
(3:51) - B: this sections mogulates and messes around with the opening idea (one voice moves while the other is stationary)
(4:06) A’: now the second seven bar phrase ends in C major too.
TRIO
(4:56) - A: opens with a C that leaps up an octave to make a minor 6th (C and E flat) from a turn. Then a few measures later the main idea, flowing triplet scales. Transition from F major and ends in C major.
(5:42) - B: plays with the opening rhythm, ending on a half cadence, F - C (I - V).
(5:54) - A’: this time there is no transition and the trio ends in F major.
(6:48) - MENUETTO DA CAPO

MVT 3, Polonaise (arranged from Diventindo V mvt 4)
(7:41) - A: a sweet 8 measure phrase that uses only F and C major (I and V) chords.
(8:07) - B: a quick four measure intermission that ends on a half cadence.
(8:13) - A’: this time only a four measure phrase instead of eight measures.
