STORYLINE:

Leaders and worshipers of the eastern christian churches gathered in the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Sunday to celebrate the orthodox Christmas Eve.

The newly elected Patriarch of the Greek Church, H.B. Irinos, and the Patriarch of the Coptic Church, Archbishop Doctor Anba Abraham, were among those who have made the pilgrimage this year.

Dozens of boyscouts played their drums and trumpets as the processions approached Manger square just outside the Church of the Nativity.

Israel has maintained its ban on Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat leaving his headquarters at Ramallah to attend.

Meanwhile in Russia, orthodox christians were also celebrating their Christmas Eve on Sunday.

The orthodox churches still use the old Julian calendar, which has been superseded elsewhere by the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582 because it is more accurate.

As a result of the difference, the orthodox churches celebrate Christmas thirteen days later.

For orthodox christians, Christmas is the second most important religious holiday after Easter. Worshippers also consider it to be the beginning of the new year.

Russia's national Christmas services will be held overnight on Sunday, with the main service at Christ the Saviour Cathedral at the Kremlin beginning at 2200 local time (1900 GMT).
