Huberd's Shoe Grease is a hugely popular conditioner that's in the top 5 best selling leather conditioners on Amazon.

I used it on two different boots: my tough, outdoorsy Red Wing Moc Toes and a friend's dressier, natural Chromexcel Captain boots from Thursday. It went well on one of them, and not so well on the other.

INGREDIENTS

Beeswax
Pine tar

Huberd's isn't very forthcoming with the ingredients, but I know it has beeswax and pine tar and it has no silicone, animal fat (like mink oil) or preservatives.

The beeswax and pine tar help to form a water resistant barrier around the boots that protects them against muck and grime.

APPLICATION

It's very sticky, like apple butter, so what you need to do is sit the tin in some hot water for a few minutes until it softens.

While it's softening, brush your boots with a horsehair brush to make sure you're not leaving any dirt in there that will get stuck deep in the leather when you apply the grease.

Once the grease is liquid, apply it to the leather with a lint-free cloth, making sure to pay extra attention to the creases where the foot bends.

RESULTS

With Red Wing's dark, tough, oil tanned leather, the result was great. It didn't make it any shinier, but it did definitely improve the water resistance; water beads off of it nicely, now.

With Chromexcel, it was a disaster. Chromexcel is a leather that's prized for its nice depth of color, which Huberd's annihilated.

Some people on the internet said this leather can be used with Huberd's, but they were wrong. THANKS REDDIT.

The boots are splotchy, darkened but not evenly so.

So it's great with rough outdoorsy leather, but not great for producing a shine or a base for polish or for preserving the color.

PRICE

About $1.60 per ounce. That's pretty inexpensive.
