Principles of neuroplasiticy and contemporary practice in aphasia: Where are we now?

Abstract

The past decade has witnessed much interest in the principles of neuroplasticity, espoused by commentators such as Kleim and Jones (2008). These principles have generated new lines of enquiry in aphasia research, with outcomes revealing some affirmatory practices as well as some surprising and potentially controversial results. This presentation will outline current findings and discuss their implications for clinical practice.

Associate Professor Elizabeth Cardell

Associate Professor Libby Cardell’s clinical and research work in aphasia spans over 25 years. Her research Master’s degree (1999) investigated treatment efficacy for lexical-semantic anomia, and her PhD (2006) explored online sentence processing. After a long clinical career in neurorehabilitation, Dr Cardell entered full-time academia in 2008 and has been Head of the Griffith University Master of Speech Pathology program since its inception in 2012. She is in high demand as a national and international speaker and has published a number of journal articles and treatment resources. She is currently researching novel models of care and cost-effectiveness in aphasia treatment, related to the issue of optimal treatment dosage to enhance communication outcomes.
