The Turkish research ship Oruts Reyes will remain in the eastern Mediterranean for 90 days, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu announced in an interview with the Turkish channel “A Haber”.

Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu noted that “partial” Navtex will be issued for Oruts Reyes’s stay in the eastern Mediterranean, which will concern each region separately and on different dates.

As he clarified, the first Navtex will concern researches in western areas (s.s. areas of Turkish-Libyan memorandum) and at the end of the quarter Oruts Reyes will approach the (Turkish) mainland.

The reason for the war was the possible expansion of Greek territorial waters in the Aegean, the Turkish Foreign Minister noted, however, noting that Ankara is not bothered by their expansion in the Ionian Sea. “Greece acts as it wants where it has rights. This does not concern us. However, in the Aegean they cannot extend their borders to 12 miles. This is a cause of war. We are not going to allow Greece to extend its territorial waters from 6 to 12 miles. I say it very clearly “, said the head of the Turkish diplomacy.

The Greeks demonstrated that they are not in favor of dialogue with Turkey by refuting reports of NATO-brokered talks for a de-escalation of tension in the East Mediterranean, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Friday.

“By not being honest about the NATO mediation, Greece showed us once more that it is not ready for a dialogue,” Cavusoglu was quoted as saying in translated comments, accusing Athens of backing down from talks after agreeing to them.

In comments published in Turkish media, Cavusoglu said that his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendias, turned down a proposal for “unconditional talks.”

“If Greece expects us to give up on our rights in the Eastern Mediterranean and accede to its demands, it is in for disappointment,” the Turkish foreign minister added.

Cavusoglu’s comments come as Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos MItsotakis on Friday called on Turkey to “stop the provocations, start the talks.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told the European Parliament on Thursday that the European Union did not have jurisdiction over maritime boundaries and it should remain unbiased in Turkey's dispute with Greece.

The two countries have competing claims to continental shelves and rights to potential energy resources in the east Mediterranean. EU leaders will address the issue at a summit on Sept. 24-25, as Greece has called for sanctions on Ankara.

Addressing the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee via videoconference, Cavusoglu said Turkey was ready for "unconditional" dialogue with Greece and the bloc.
