STORYLINE :

Bangladesh and India have strengthened their border security even as villagers from both sides began leaving their homes on Wednesday as a standoff over a deportation issue heightened tension along their frontier.

Tension has been building up along Bangladesh's northern and western border with India in the past two weeks since the Indian authorities tried to deport hundreds of Bengali-speaking Muslims it says are illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

Bangladesh maintains they are Indian Muslims from India's West Bengal state who are physically similar to Bangladeshis and speak the same Bengali language. It says they were forcibly brought to the West Bengal frontier in a special train by Indian authorities for deportation.

Indian authorities have denied that they are trying to move the deportees across the border by force.

Hundreds of men, women and children, meanwhile, have been left stranded at border areas under open skies with little food or water as the two countries argue over their nationality.

Most of them are traditional snake charmers and are living on the no man's land near Satgachi along the India-Bangladesh border.

India's foreign Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters in New Delhi that Bangladesh has rejected India's proposal for individual verification of 213 stranded men, women and children.

Sarna said India was trying to end the impasse through diplomatic efforts.
