Video—especially animated video—is one of the best ways to effectively communicate clear instructions to your audience. In order to ensure their graduates have a smooth graduation day, Imperial College London looked to create an instructional animation for graduates as well as their family and friends to communicate instructions and the relevant procedures regarding their graduation day. This video can be found on their website and was also played at The Royal Albert Hall entrance on the day so that the information about where to go and what to do was accessible, consistent, and easily digestible. The video explains all of the relevant facts using simple animations and a light-hearted theme that focuses on the celebration of the students’ graduation day while also being an effective communication tool. The animations were kept sparse and included depictions of key elements of the ceremony such as tickets, forms, to streamline information transfer to the graduating students. All elements were designed intentionally so that the focus would be on the information itself, acting as a guide for students and letting them know what to expect on their big day.

Imperial College London is a public research university in London, England. Their history begins during the Victorian era with Prince Albert, who had a vision for a cultural area which evolved to include the Royal Albert Hall, Victoria & Albert Museum, Natural History Museum and royal colleges. The Royal Albert Hall has been used for the College’s graduations for the last 60 years. This instruction video, formatted as a typical “how-to” video acts as a celebratory way to honour the successes of the graduates while also acting as a way to communicate information to such a large group.
