I think almost more people know the name Bumblebee from the Transformers movies for the car than Camaro. Funny enough, the first movies took place a bit before the fifth generation went on sale. In the first movie, a dummy with the original molds of the 2006 prototype was built at Saleen. Even the rims were just simple hubcaps. Under the body, a Pontiac GTO was used instead of a Camaro. Fortunately, in the second film, they didn't have to make the effort and they were able to use a pre-production model.



Where does the name of the Camaro come from? According to GM, there were many names to choose from. But they decided on Camaro, from the French "Camarade", which means friend or companion. The biggest competition was "Panther."



In 2002, the fourth generation Camaro was cancelled due to declining sales. For 7 years they had to wait for a successor. And even for the prototype from the NAIAS 2006 and the confirmation for a successor a whole 4 years.



But after the previews in the movies, people were hot for the car. That was also the goal of GM. With the films, they wanted to draw the attention of the younger generation to the car and promote it. The good contacts between Michael Bay and Chevy were a big advantage.



In the middle of the 2000s, it was a big trend for American coupes to adopt a bit of a retro design. The Challenger, Mustang, and even the Camaro all used design elements from their 60s and 70s predecessors.



In 2012, Chevy brought out the top model available to the general market, the ZL1. 14213 vehicles out of the nearly 560,000 Camaros sold are said to be ZL1s. Chevy managed with the car on the Nordschleife a time of 7:41,27. That is really not slow for the time and only very slightly slower than a 997 Porsche Turbo S.



There are many fans of the Transformers movies. For the hardcore fans Chevy has released something special. The Camaro Transformers Edition. 1411 vehicles are available with all sorts of references to the movies.



GM's fastest selling special model to date. It took 3 minutes for all 100 Neiman Marcus Edition Camaro vehicles to be sold out.



In 2012, GM signed a deal with Trans Am Depot to market the name and Pontiac logo. They produced a modern interpretation of the Pontiac Trans Am based on the Camaro.



Finally, the most evil version of the Camaro. Much like the Demon at Dodge, Chevy had a factory, hardcore drag version of the Camaro before that. The COPO Camaro. With up to 7 liters of displacement and Hoosier Drag tires, the car can sprint off with a wheelie in drag race. Unfortunately, it is not street legal.
