Words cannot express how happy I am playing this again after all these years.
Ever since Project Wingman was published in 2020, never did I play the Alpha demo version ever again (did you?). Today I suddenly reminisce about it, so I decided to install the demo, whose website is still alive and kicking somehow. The demo works perfectly fine, and my god, it looks and feels absolutely gorgeous.
Back then in 2018, I only had a GT1030 graphics card, so I could only play it in low settings at 1080p30. Still, I was elated at the time since it was my very first PC, and I was happy to be able to play it nonetheless. Now that I have upgraded to a 4060, I can play it in maximum settings at 1440p60, albeit with some occassional frame drops. It obviously goes without saying that the demo now looks much better and more vibrant than what I played in the olden days, this mission in particular. The explosions look amazing, gunning somehow looks better than the finished version of the game, and the rain with all those reflections—aaaahhhhhhhh... eyes melting. Not to mention the beautiful soundtrack of Calamity, pure nostalgia.
Moreover, I realized how far the game has changed. For instance, I prefer the demo's HUD to what we've got now; it just looks unique and discernible. I always felt that the current HUD is too small. You may argue that a smaller HUD makes your screen more visible since it doesn't obstruct your view, but I beg to differ. But hey, at least you can change the size to your liking in the beta version. Gunning has also changed. Although I said earlier that it looks better in the demo, it still feels much better in the finished game. There's a much bigger room of error in the latter, which I think makes the game more satisfying to play. The gun reticle in the former is also deceptive; you have to aim a bit forward of the reticle to where your target is heading, otherwise you're just gonna waste ammo.
Speaking of 2018, at the the time, it never even dawned on me that I would own a YouTube channel about Ace Combat and Project Wingman—let alone having 1,000+ subscribers and making actual money out of it... so, thank you very much. This wouldn't be possible without you, guys. I have never been able to make a proper thank-you video about this, so I'll try making one in the coming days or so. Maybe I will tell you more about myself too (like my 250-subscriber-special video from three years ago); who knows?
Also thank you to everyone who has supported this game on Kickstarter back in the day. I believe the game's demo was first made available in 2017, so it has gone through a lot. We wouldn't have the pleasure to enjoy Project Wingman if not for the thousands of backers having their faith in the game's development. Well, seeing the end product, no wonder it got three times the initial funding target of AU$35,000.
In the two hours of playing the demo, I tried playing Conquest as well. Managed to complete it to the very end by simply spamming unguided rockets on fighters, bombers, and airships. Guess we all have been trained to use A2G weapons on air targets since the very beginning, huh?
Let me know if you're interested in seeing some Conquest in the demo version.
