Welcome to the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel. In this video, we’ll be reviewing the brand new Roland FP-60X, which is the update to the FP-60.

We’ll cover all of the new upgrades, as well as just a general review of the instrument as a whole.

If this is the first time on the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support!

Piano Sound

The biggest difference with the FP-60X vs its predecessor is probably the addition of Roland’s new BMC chip. This is a brand new processor Roland’s been developing for a few years now, which has a much more complex algorithm than previous versions. We’ve already done an FP30X vs FP60 comparison video, and the difference in sound quality due to the new chip was substantial!

What’s better about the new chip? For starters, there’s a much more authentic dynamic response in the lower range of the instrument, and overall, it’s a more complex sounding piano tone.

They’ve also added the new ‘My Stage’ button, which essentially gives you access to several piano designer pre-sets. This is a fast and efficient way to explore different configurations of reverbs, ambience, and other sound related parameters to figure out the combination you like best.

There are over 300 onboard sounds for an enormous amount of selection. The E pianos are improved from the new processor, and the pads especially are super thick and full. There are 256 notes of polyphony which is plenty, and the speaker system consists of two speakers, powered by a total of 26 watts of power.

A nice returning feature is an on-board 3 band equalizer. This is a really great feature that allows musicians more real-time control, as opposed to digging through a menu.

Piano Action

The FP-60X uses Roland’s PHA-4 action. This is a returning action from the FP-60, and is featured all throughout the lower half of Roland’s action. Generally, the PHA4 is thought of as one of the top plastic actions on the market.

This action features escapement, a triple sensor, and a nice yet subtle texture. This is a reliable, highly durable action overall.

Piano Features

The FP60X offers a lot of Bluetooth connectivity options, such as Bluetooth Audio, Bluetooth MIDI, ¼” outputs for connecting to external speakers, and a mic input (with mic volume level knob.)

It also has both types of USB ports to play and record onto a USB key, and several different pedal input options.

It comes standard with a sustain pedal, but you can also add an optional matching designer stand and triple pedal system.

In terms of other functions, all of the standard functions you’d expect are present, such as Split, Layer, twin, metronome, etc.

The FP60X is also compatible with Roland’s new Piano Every Day app. It may not be the slickest using app, but it’s super easy to use and absolutely loaded with features. Roland’s also included a new forced pairing button for faster connection to external devices.

While Roland doesn’t mention this in the literature, we’ve confirmed that the FP60X also has a USB Audio Interface, meaning you can plug this into a computer and it will stream audio to and from this device entirely through the USB cable. Now, since Roland doesn’t advertise this in their literature, that means this isn’t an officially supported function, and could in theory be deactivated in the future, just as a caution.

Thanks so much for watching!
