Chromosomes are classified into different types based on the position of the centromere, which plays a crucial role during cell division. According to centromere location, chromosomes are of four main types: metacentric, submetacentric, acrocentric, and telocentric.
In metacentric chromosomes, the centromere is located at the middle, producing two equal arms. Submetacentric chromosomes have the centromere slightly away from the center, resulting in unequal arms. In acrocentric chromosomes, the centromere is near one end, forming one very short and one long arm. Telocentric chromosomes possess the centromere at the terminal end, giving only one arm.
This classification is important for understanding karyotyping, genetics, and chromosomal behavior during mitosis and meiosis.
