Sober / Sober minded

Today, I will move on to Titus chapter 2. This chapter speaks of sound doctrine. A word used a lot in this chapter is sober. It is used 4 times. This word in its context as it is taken from the scrolls is not sober / sober-minded. Your mind must be clear, vigilant.
God mentions the word four times in the chapter. The word sober refers to drinking. It also refers to the state of mind. For me to be soberminded. I make sure I am getting my rest, and I am not overwhelming myself. I need to be alert and vigilant because the devil is busy, he will not rest until his task is accomplished. We are in this spiritual warfare. Its 24/7 he is always busy, he comes at Christians in different ways, he cannot take away your salvation. If he can keep your preoccupied in not doing the work of God, you are not being effective for the Lord.
Let’s look at some bible verses to support what I have said.
The devil has tasks to accomplish. Let’s look at Matthew chapter 12 verses 43 -

***** when I ask the Lord to cleanse me of unconfessed sin, I also ask him to fill me with the Holy spirit. I like to confess my sins, though maybe there is something I have forgotten to confess. I do not want to be empty afterwards., I want to be filled with what God would have for me. I want to think and live a Godly life.
******** before we read the next passage remember, the Devil is busy. He cannot do anything to us that God will not allow to happen. Whatever concerns we have bring to God.
1 Peter chapter 5 verses 6 to 8 -

******* Jesus Christ has work for you to do Corinthians Chapter 3 verses 8 and 9.


***** God has work for us to do. Part of the devil job is to hinder us. We should be vigilant , we should be aware , soberminded.
Part of me being soberminded is to get my rest. There are days when I get home from work late and up in 4 hours. I feel mentally punched drunk. I do not think about these days after I work. My lack of sleep affects me. There are times in life we have these challenges , we ask the Lord to work them out for us.


******* as we finish up on this portion speaking of sober, sober minded. It’s not just being sober physically; it is mentally allowing us to be spiritually ready to be used of God. Being sober is to allow us to be our best version of ourselves.

In this portion we will speak soberly in regard to drinking.

Some bible verses have eating as a correlation with drinking. The bible speaks of gluttonous and drunkenness in the same sense.
The consequences of drinking and gluttony are poverty and drowsiness--- To be wise, such should be managed so it may not happen to you. Let us read
Proverbs 23:19-23-19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.


***** How much a person should and should not drink may come with a different set of rules.
Now those in kingship have a great responsibility to make important decisions. It speaks of strong drink and wine affecting the judgement.
Though if you are ready to perish and those of a heavy heart speak differently, some types of drinks are scripturally allowed. Let’s read -

***** being sober is one of the few things spoken of in Titus chapter 2. We will speak with different members of family and society, with sound teaching on how they can act. When I read Titus chapter 2 it gives a guideline to go by. In reading chapter one we know the location of Titus. He is in Greece. Titus is Greek, his cultural and ways are different from that of Paul who is a Jew. When you are born again your lifestyle changes, who you are changes. Paul is aware of this and being used to giving Titus blueprint of how to be. It is not just for him, it’s for those in Greece.
Let us read chapter 2 of Titus verses 1 to 5




***** we spoke of older men to be grave which is honorable; sober, they are giving of themselves, patience and the have self-control.
******* be sober is a serious matter **********
We also spoke of expectation of aged woman, who are to be sober. They are told to love their husband. I find this to be interesting when the bible tells one mate to love the other. There are times when you may not want to them. God tells us to do, because we love God we will leave our mind, heart, and soul to love our husband. There are bible verses that tell husbands to love their wife’s, one would be in Galatians chapter 5. Mothers are to love their children.

****** the young men are also to be sober mind and speak of servants. Bosses and supervisors were called master’s until the late 19th century here in the states –let us read verses 6 to 9.
