Chilarai was a great figure in the history of Cooch Behar, he was the son of Maharaja Biswa Singh, the founder of the Cooch Empire. Taking over as the commander of the Koch Empire, he conquered all the kingdoms of Northeast India, including the Aham kingdom of Chillara. He swooped down on his enemies like a hawk, hence he came to be known as Chilarai, his original name being Shukla Dhavj. In 1568 he invaded the Sultanate of Bengal and on his way back from the battlefield this great warrior died of plague virus. People of Rajvanshi community consider Chilarai as their ideal and celebrate Chilarai Jayanti every year.
