This afternoon join Seaside Shadows guide and historian, Andrew Hill at Trumbull Cemetery aka Old Cemetery in Lebanon, Connecticut to meet Governor Jonathan Trumbull, the only man in Connecticut colony politics who would, as an elected official, side with the Sons of Liberty and rebels during the Revolution, the man who would become the first governor of Connectiut as a state transitioning directly from the colony. Thanks to Governor Jonathan Trumbull and others like him, Connecticut garnered the nickname, “The Provision State.” The Trumbull family, merchants for generations who also supplied troops in the French and Indian War and had successful trading partnerships helped to provide supplies to Patriot troops making Lebanon a favorite stop on Washington’s journeys during the war. At Valley Forge, it was the Governor who sent cattle to save the starving troops! Trumbull turned his Merchant store into the Lebanon War Office where men such as Lafayette, Rochambeau and Washington would come to meet. Washington even called the Governor, “Brother Jonathan.” Governor Trumbull had a lasting impact on the region and his family legacy was carried on by his son, painter, Jonathan Trumbull Jr. Governor Jonathan Trumbull gave so much that it is said he died in debt but his legacy of character, generosity, and great political influence far outweighs any financial debt he could have acquired.
