Seefin Passage Tomb West Wicklow

Описание к видео Seefin Passage Tomb West Wicklow

Irish passage tombs have always an air of mystery to themm my story begins when myself and my then girlfriend decided to see in the dawn of the new mellenium on a hill on which a 5000 year old passage tomb sits! This tomb is small in comparison to the large and popular ones like that of Newgrange in County Meath. But Seefin stands high on a hill in West Wicklow with magnificent views of the surrounding Irish countryside and seems to have an effect on all who visit it. This video tells my personal story of a visit there 20 years ago. I also give some of the history that is known about these tombs and also some of the folklore associated with them too!

Seefin is from the Neolithic era that dates from approx 3750-2500 B.C., this is a time when people began to farm the land rather than being nomadic huntergathers. In folklore it has an association with the ancient tribes; the Tuatha de Dannan and the Milesians who struggled for power of their lands. One side lost and was banished to the "Otherworld".

To visit the tomb, travel to the Kilbride Army camp. At a "T" junction there is a left turn for the camp and a right for the Sally Gap direction. Take the right and drive for approx 2km and you should have woods on both sides. There is a black and yellow forestry gate that you can park at. After crossing the gate, keep right on the forestry road, after a few turns there is a track that will bring you directly up the side of the hill to Seefin. Be careful not to stop too soon as taking on the hill too soon will have you walking through thick heather. The track is much more enjoyable. The tomb is completely unguarded and fully accessible but please respect this site and do not remove stones or leave litter.
