Summary:
An incorruptible police captain wages a personal battle against ruthless bootlegger Nick Scarsi amid a city riddled with political graft. After repeated attempts to bring Scarsi to justice are thwarted, the captain is reassigned to a quiet precinct—until a hit-and-run by Scarsi’s brother draws the gangland feud to his doorstep.

Using a nightclub singer’s testimony and mounting public pressure, the captain maneuvers through legal and political obstacles toward a tense standoff at the precinct. The film explores Prohibition-era corruption, media scrutiny, and the fragile line between law and organized crime.

Background:
Adapted from Bartlett Cormack’s 1927 Broadway play, The Racket was produced by Howard Hughes through The Caddo Company and distributed by Paramount. Its hard-edged depiction of municipal corruption led to bans in Chicago. The film was nominated for Outstanding Picture at the 1st Academy Awards and is recognized as a key late-silent entry in the emerging gangster genre. Long thought lost, it survives through a print located in Howard Hughes’s collection and was preserved in 2016 by the Academy Film Archive with materials from UNLV and the Howard Hughes collections.

Nick Scarsi and “The Old Man” have long been noted as being modeled on Al Capone and Chicago mayor William Hale “Big Bill” Thompson, respectively.

G. Pat Collins reprises his Broadway role as Patrolman Johnson; the AFI Catalog notes this as his feature film debut.

The film premiered in New York on June 30, 1928, running approximately 7,646 feet across eight reels, which corresponds to about 84 minutes at standard silent projection speeds.

A sound-era remake, The Racket , was released by RKO and starred Robert Mitchum and Robert Ryan.

The Racket was preserved and reintroduced to audiences in a 2016 restoration by the Academy Film Archive, and has aired on Turner Classic Movies.
