A guitar lesson for "New York City Serenade" off of Bruce Springsteen's 1973 album The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle.

This song, in standard tuning, is not only one of Springsteen's longest studio tracks, it's also one of his jazziest. In this tutorial, I cover the guitar solo you hear during the song's lengthy piano introduction, in addition to every chord progression played later on. You'll have to listen to the track for the strumming and picking patterns, but I go over you everything you need to know to piece this underrated classic together. Not too challenging and a good one for beginners just learning their barre chords.

Bruce opened with "New York City Serenade" when I saw him at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in August of 2016. It was a fabulous rendition, with the string section of course, and the start of a 3 hour and 59 minute thrill ride of a concert that I witnessed that night. It was truly special.

I'll forever call "New York City Serenade" the Boss's most underrated song. This one, along with tracks like "Incident on 57th Street" and "Rosalita" were indicators of the greatness yet to come from the mind of Bruce Springsteen. These songs were deep, sprawling stories that would come to define the Born to Run album which came shortly after. I enjoy the loose and raw performance on "Serenade." It's imperfect, but in a charming way, as if Bruce had an awesome and ambitious vision and brought it to life, but at a less polished level than his later work. This is a magnificent track and a very climactic finish to the WIESS album. Side two of this record is simply phenomenal. It's three 7+ minute songs that are a great showcase of Bruce and the band's talent.
