Is there such a thing as "retro kilt fashion"?
How can you accomplish a retro or "vintage" look for your Highland Dress?

Essentially, Highland dress has not changed a great deal in the past 100 years. If you look at photographs from 1920s Scotland, many of the outfits look almost identical to what we wear today for smart day wear, semi-formal or formal kilted fashion.

Tweaks to kilted menswear have come and gone. A few newer innovations such as the Semi-dress Sporran seem to have stuck, but many more ideas have faded. For instance, you won't see many bias-cut kilts out there, though a few years ago they were the hot new trend. Kilts with pockets are now more of the thing, but they are still not as popular as a traditional wool kilt and sporran.

Highland Dress is traditional national dress at its core, so it is resistant to change.

In recent years TV shows such as 'Downton Abbey', 'Boardwalk Empire' and 'Peaky Blinders have spurred an interest in "retro" 1920s fashion. And it seems people have always had a soft spot for that decade anyway.

If you want to be both trendy and traditional...and you love kilts...you're in luck. It is relatively easy to make your kilted outfits look and feel vintage.
