Program Description: On July 10, 2018, there was a horrific gas explosion in downtown Sun Prairie. The explosion caused millions of dollars in damage, displaced dozens of families, caused the destruction of several buildings, and resulted in the death of SPVFD Captain Cory Barr. While the Sun Prairie Media Center produced several programs related to the events of July 10, none is more significant than this one. We were asked to be the sole media representative at Captain Barr's funeral on July 14 which took place at the Sun Prairie High School. Since the funeral was closed to the public, this meant that our broadcast and stream -- which was shown outside the school to the public and also picked up by many media outlets throughout Madison and Milwaukee -- was the only avenue for many to grieve for Captain Barr and for what had happened in Sun Prairie. The fact that the Sun Prairie Media Center was entrusted with this broadcast encapsulates the great relationship the Media Center has with local government and the local school district. The fact the Sun Prairie Media Center was able to pull off this broadcast with less than 24 hours notice and limited access to the filming location encapsulates the great live work and the great staff that the SPMC has.
