Major Depressive Disorder is a common psychiatric illness, affecting 5 to 30% of the population and accounts for about 10% of productivity. Depression needs urgent treatment. Improved understanding of its mechanisms will give a better chance of developing more effective methods of treatment. Scientists at the University of Edinburgh, identified several alterations in the brains of depression patients. The researchers have noted brain changes, mainly in areas associated with emotion processing and thinking. The finding contributes evidence that depression has physical effects on the body that were not seen in patients without the condition. This may also lead to more effective ways to treat this widespread condition. These changes were most notable in the patients white matter of the brain, which is crucial for inter-neuron communication using electrical signals and thus allows different parts of the brain to communicate with each other. This is the largest single study to show that depression changes the wiring of patients brains.
