Chongqing East Railway Station opened with enormous attention last summer, promoted as one of the largest train stations in the world, with a total floor area of approximately 1.22 million square metres. Designed to anchor China’s expanding high-speed rail network and connect major cities within a six-hour travel circle, the scale of this project is undeniably ambitious.

But months after the grand opening, what is the real situation on the ground?

In this video, I return to Chongqing East Railway Station during the Spring Festival travel rush to examine the actual passenger numbers, train frequency, and overall atmosphere inside the station. From the underground car park and improved road access to the departure halls, business lounges, and retail spaces, we take a detailed look at how the station is operating today.

Are the vast halls filled with travellers, or does the enormous scale feel larger than demand? Has connectivity improved enough to justify the location in Nanan District’s Chayuan area? And how does it compare to Chongqing North Railway Station and Chongqing West Railway Station?
