It appeared for the purpose of connecting a suburb resort area about 100 km (60 mile) away from Tokyo in 1959, and at first ran as the express train bound for Nikko ,later for Izu.
Even after being replaced with the next generation EMU (series 183) in 1976, it remained as a locomotive for the imperial passenger coach.
