Between 1968 and 1989, East Germany systematically doped over 10,000 athletes—most of them young girls—with powerful steroids in a state-sponsored program to dominate Olympic competitions. The athletes were told they were taking "vitamins." Instead, they were given Oral-Turinabol, a steroid 20 times more potent than testosterone.

The results were gold medals—and destroyed lives.
This is the story of Heidi Krieger, who won the 1986 European Championships in shot put, only to discover years later that the "vitamins" her coaches gave her had irreversibly masculinized her body. In 1997, she transitioned to living as Andreas Krieger—not by choice, but as the completion of what East German sports medicine had started.
