World's most expensive horse sold for £5.25m

A one-year-old filly has become the world's most expensive horse after being sold at auction in Newmarket, Suffolk, for a cool £5.25 million. The unnamed filly is the daughter of the world's most sought after stallion, Galileo, and full-sister to 2012 Oaks winner. She was sold to Mandore International on behalf of Seikh Joaan's Al Shaqab Racing, which is owned by the Qatari royal family.

"We didn't expect to pay that sort of price, but Al Shaqab Racing is keen to invest. She is a magnificent specimen," Mandore's Nicolas de Watrigant told auctioneer Tattersall's website.

Sheikh Joaan won the Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe, Europe's richest horse race, with Treve last Sunday. Report by Sarah Kerr.
