Nudibranchs are more varying in color than most groups of animals on Earth - why? Well scientists have narrowed it down but I am sure there are more reasons than we know or that I have listed here. This is just a start :)
1️⃣ Camouflage - let’s be real, Nudibranchs are slugs afterall, meaning they are SLOW AF. Without a shell, it is hard to protect oneself from predators. But what if you can just blend in to your surroundings? Bingo. This is called Cryptic or Disruptive Coloration in the science world and many species use it!
2️⃣ Warning to Predators - Want to venture away from your safe space but still SLOW AF? Well if you don’t taste good, are toxic, sting, or hurt your predators - you better let them know. Using warning colors to do this is called Aposomatic coloration.
3️⃣ Mimicry - Well what if your friend is toxic but you aren’t? And you are slow and scared to venture to new lands. Just look like your friend ;)
4️⃣ Food - Nudis are quite literally what they eat. They spend so much time eating one type of sponge, anemone, or other food source that they absorb their pigments! Some even absorb the chloroplasts and photosynthesize nutrients.
