We parked the RV in Mason City and took the Jeep out to Clear Lake, Iowa, to visit one of the most meaningful stops in rock ‘n’ roll history …the Buddy Holly crash site. After pulling into the Don McLean “American Pie” parking lot, we walked the short path lined with the iconic glasses memorial and made our way out to the exact spot where the music world was changed forever. The nonprofit that maintains the parking lot and conveniences makes it easy for travelers to stop, reflect, and pay their respects. This site marks the tragic loss of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, moment that Don McLean immortalized in his legendary song American Pie. It’s a powerful reminder of how fragile life is and how deeply music can shape our culture and memories.
