Last week I had the privilege of spending an hour chatting with one of my favourite tennis players and good mate, Marc Polmans.

I have known Marc for about 12 years now, and although he’s 4 years younger than me he’s always been one of my idols in the tennis world. The admiration has come about from observing his tenacity, his commitment and the professionalism he brings everyday. He seems to hold his dream close to his heart at all times, not allowing external distractions to infiltrate the desire. That’s special. And that’s why his been coined the ultimate digger.
A “digger”, in my eyes, means someone that goes about their practice and matches with full focus and complete commitment to getting the best out of themselves. It loosely refers to an army troop in the war zone trenches; nowhere to hide, heart on the sleeve and ego in plain sight.

Marc and I spoke about different stages and influences in his career, the moulding of his character, his trademark hat, getting coached by his brother, his Grand Slam memories and his aspirations looking ahead.

Any young diggers out there, this one’s for you!
