Brooklyn, late afternoon.
The September sun was sliding low over President Street when seven men of the infamous Gallo gang where holed up during the Columbo gangland war, they had gone to the mattresses. Bored and restless they had been under siege for months and where eager for some action, they wouldn’t have to wait long….
A scream in the street raised the alarm and Then they saw it.
Black smoke curling out of a tenement window at 73 President Street just down from their famous mob hangout. The scream shouted that a fire had broken out and there were children trapped in the building.
Without hesitation, the men sprang into action. Larry Gallo one of the Gallo brothers and fearless gang leader led the charge, shoving through the building’s doorway as the others fanned out behind him. Inside, the stairwell was a chimney of smoke, thick and choking. Upstairs, six children cried out, trapped, as flames gnawed at a mattress.
Jackets came off, slapping against the fire, smothering it. Anthony Abbate-marco ripped a burning curtain from the rod and stomped it down. Alfonso Serantonio scooped a toddler into his arms, coughing through the haze. Leonard Dello, Commarato, Illiano — each man grabbed a child, carrying them down the stairs two at a time.
Larry stumbled, hacking smoke, but waved off help with a growl. Evelyn, five years old, clung to Albert Gallo’s neck, her hair singed, eyes wide.
By the time the fire trucks arrived, the blaze was out, the kids were safe, and the gangsters stood in the street, shirts blackened, ties askew, their breathing ragged but steady.
Mrs. Sista Biaz, returning from the market, dropped her bags and collapsed in relief, clutching her children.
“They saved the lives of my babies,” she sobbed.
The fire chief gave a curt nod. “Had the fire out and the kids out. A very good job.”
And then came the cops. Their inspector said “Well,”, “I hope the police have made them into decent citizens.”
The scene would further enhance their legendary status on the streets of Brooklyn.
