SCANDINAVIA & the BALTICS TOUR: Part TWELVE – Scenic Train Journey from Flåm to Myrdal & the Kjosfossen Waterfalls, Norway 14.07.2025
Hi friends,
After enjoying the scenic fjord cruise, we arrived at the Flåm Railway Station and we had king-size veg Pizza and french-fry for lunch at the restaurant located there. We couldn’t stomach all of it as the serving was really large and many of us got most of it packed for the way as we felt bad to leave it half-eaten.
After waiting for nearly an hour our train arrived and we boarded the train and occupied the pre-booked allotted seats.
Norway's most scenic train trip ‘The Flåm -Myrdal-Flam’ train journey, also known as the FLAMBANA – The Flåm Railway, is a highly scenic train ride through the Norwegian mountains, offering stunning views of waterfalls, valleys, and tunnels. The 20 km railway line connects the village of Flåm to the mountain station of Myrdal, with a significant elevation change from 864 m to sea level. It's a popular tourist attraction known for its impressive scenery and engineering feats, including a 180° turn inside a tunnel.
The Flåm Railway gradient is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world, with a maximum gradient of 1 in 18 (5.5%). The train travels from Flåm (at sea level) to Myrdal (at 864m above sea level). The railway was originally built to transport goods from Flåm, and its construction was a significant engineering feat.
The Flåm Railway opened provisionally on August 01, 1940 for express goods and freight traffic. It opened for passenger traffic in 1941. The line was an important transport artery for the district of Sogn, linking the communities along the Sognefjord to Oslo and Bergen via the Bergen Railway. County Governor Ingolf Elster Christensen was a strong proponent of the Flåm Railway and generated county-wide support for the railway as a freight link to and from the Sognefjord. Governor Ingolf Elster came to be considered the Father of the Flåm railway, and a statue in tribute to him has been erected near the Flåm Railway Museum. The work of the labourers who built the Flåm Railway was very demanding. Eighteen of the twenty tunnels were built by hand. It took a labourer up to a month of hard work to drill one meter of tunnel!
Here are the fact files of the FLAMBANA – The Flåm Railway:
Length: 20.2 km; Difference in altitude: 864 m; Steepest incline: 5.5% and it is an electric train with a maximum speed of 40 km/h; there are 20 tunnels, and 4 water tunnels; the train has 7 stops.
The Kjosfossen waterfalls at Myrdal, with a 225-meter drop, is the most fascinating among the waterfalls on this route which makes it a stunning natural attraction, and it is made even more fascinating by the legend associated with it. It is said that a witch comes dancing and seduces men by enticing them with her charm. This witch or forest spirit called Huldra finds a mention in a Norwegian folklore. According to this Norwegian folklore, Huldra is a seductive female forest creature, often depicted as beautiful with a cow's tail, lures travelers into the woods with her enchanting song. Currently this scene is enacted as the Flåm Railway train stops at Kjosfossen by an actress, often a student from the Norwegian Ballet Academy; she appears on a rock near the falls, dressed in red as Huldra, and dances to traditional Norwegian music, creating a captivating scene for tourists.
A trip on the Flåmsbana Railway takes you right past the Kjosfossen waterfalls, and the train stops here for about 15 minutes for the travelers to enjoy the Kjosfossen waterfalls and the legend comes alive through an enactment!
From Myrdal we took another train to Flåm and thereafter drove to Oslo, and after dinner in an Indian restaurant, checked into Hotel Scandic Solli and rested for the night.
