The landscape that inspired Theodore Roosevelt is relatively unknown to the rest of Americans. Locals splitboard and cross country ski here when the snow is good. My journey was to seek out backcountry lines on the buttes and Badlands, an area under attack from the oil industry and 100+ years of illegal colonist land seizures. Jeremy Jones of POW talks about oil development here and a local splitboarder shares his stoke for North Dakota powder. Dakota Access Pipeline Protests are explained. Natives Outdoors athlete Conner Ryan and local historian Calvin Grinnell (Running Elk) help us understand the history of the land. I stopped at White Butte, the state high point as part of the Skiing States project to ski the 24 snowy state high points in the USA.

The Killdeer Mountains are a beautiful prominent location for skiing and tribal history however are occupied and shut off. Other locations on federal lands have potential for gully and chute skiing and are yet to be explored. Wild buffalo roam in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Get a good map and check out North Dakota for touring or to find undiscovered lines.
