Oakley spent his life on a five-foot chain, watching the world pass him by. Day after day, year after year, he stood at the end of a short, locked chain, exposed to scorching summers and freezing winters, with no shelter to protect him from the elements. When the temperatures soared past 100 degrees, he baked in the sun. When they plunged to 13 degrees, he endured it alone, shivering and helpless, with nowhere to escape. Oakley was nothing more than a prisoner, forced to serve a life sentence.



Oakley is painfully thin. Nothing more than skin and bones, his skeletal frame hidden only by the fur that once protected him from the cold and heat he was forced to endure without shelter. For the past year and a half, a kind-hearted woman had been quietly watching over him. She fed and watered him, doing what she could while he remained chained, isolated, and deprived of everything a dog needs to thrive. She called local authorities more than once, but nothing changed. Oakley remained trapped.



Eventually, the woman asked the owner if he would consider surrendering Oakley. Thankfully, he said yes, but only because repeated reports had been made and he was warned he would be fined if authorities had to return. That threat saved Oakley’s life.



Once Oakley was safe, the woman contacted our rescue for support. Today, Oakley is finally free and warm at our veterinarian’s office. He is heartworm positive, infested with hookworms, and severely underweight, but for the first time in his life, he is no longer chained. He is on his way to a better life, however, his journey is just beginning. With several other critical cases in our care, we are fighting to keep our heads above water, and there is only so much we can do alone.
