The main downside is the game lagging hard and eventually freezing if you keep it going for too long.
Fortunately with Scribe Scrolls HLA you get infinite dispel magic scrolls, which can't be interrupted and get rid of your clones.
(Scribe scrolls can also be WOLed for 6 scrolls per cast)
