Produced by Gallagher Films of Green Bay and Milwaukee, this short reel advertises the DeVry Bantam 16mm Sound Motion Picture Equipment Model 14000 projector which was developed in the 1930s by the DeVry Corporation of Chicago. Herman Adolf DeVry, who was described in his early years as a “roving mechanical savant” by Educational Screen magazine in 1941, found himself working at the Industrial Film Company where he would become one of the first to pioneer and successfully market new portable motion picture projectors. Rising through the ranks of the company he gained control of it, changing its name to the DeVry Corporation and thus beginning a journey of endeavors in portable motion picture technology, as well as in education. The first Model E sold over 50,000 units to schools. The company also sold 35mm projectors to movie theaters across the nation, which featured the hallmark silent chain drive mechanism also found in the Bantam 16mm. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, the company would sell thousands of portable projectors to schools and to the U.S. government, thus revolutionizing the access of motion pictures and earning Herman DeVry the title The Father of Visual Education.

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
