Happy New year, I can't believe that it is 2022 already! Chinese New Year is just around the corner and here is an art project to celebrate the chinese new year. They celebrate good fortunes so this good luck card is a great way for 8-11 year olds to learn about the Chinese New year. The pop up card is a traditional chinese lantern and is a nice surpise when you open the card.
This art activity takes 1 hour - 1 hour 15 mins to make and has no prep involved (unless you want to cut out the rectangles of white paper ready for the children which wouldn't take long). It can be quite tricky and i wouldn't do it with any younger age groups.
This lesson incorporates some maths and some people class it as origami but it is great for art club. If you have more time or for early finishers, you could add white pen or pencil marks on the background to create stars in the sky.
2022 is a special chinese new year as the symbol is the water tiger which only occurs once every 60 years. If you wanted to create a more detailed lesson and do a 2nd part to this lesson, you could teach children how to draw a tiger for the front cover instead of a message. Leave the message for the inside, there are so many ways to personalize this project.
