How To Prepare Rhubarb For Winter - Allotment Gardening For Beginners

Описание к видео How To Prepare Rhubarb For Winter - Allotment Gardening For Beginners

Today we look at how to prepare rhubarb for winter and help it survive the cold weather and be ready to grow healthy in Spring. Rhubarb will naturally die back in winter so we do not need to remove any leaves. We put manure over our rhubarb as this keeps it a lttle warmer and feeds it when the spring warmth starts in a few weeks.

Growing strong rhubarb in the summer starts with winter care of the rhubarb crowns. If we can keep these open to the air but surrounded by manure then they will fare well over winter and be protected from the frost as much as possible without rotting. They will start to grow in the spring and the manure will have started to rot down by then.

We will never water the crowns of rhubarb until they are growing in the spring. We may put more manure around them if this washes or rots away and another load of manure in the spring will help us grow good strong rhubarb next year.
