The Celtics-Lakers Rivalry Trilogy: Bird vs. Magic | NBA 2K Classics: Year 1984

The 1970s were a challenging time for the NBA, as the league struggled to gain viewership, especially on a global scale. Seeking to bring new life to the sport, the NBA found hope in two college basketball stars, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson.

Both players had become heroes in college basketball at their respective schools, Indiana State and Michigan State. The two met during the 1979 NCAA Finals, where the young Earvin "Magic" Johnson led Michigan State to victory. Little did they know, this would mark the beginning of a legendary rivalry. Magic was later selected with the 1st overall pick in the 1979 Draft, while Bird had been drafted by the Celtics in 1978 as the 6th overall pick, but he chose to stay in college for another year before joining the NBA.

Bird and Magic quickly became household names in the NBA, each winning championships. In 1984, the two finally met in the NBA Finals. Magic, alongside veteran Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, led the Showtime Lakers against the Celtics, who were led by their "Big Three" of Bird, McHale, and Parish. The series did not disappoint, with the teams battling fiercely until the Cs ultimately prevailed in Game 7.

These two rival teams revitalized the NBA, bringing in a new era of popularity and global recognition for the league, thanks to their rich history and dramatic showdowns.
