Paavatkodichchenai: Discovering Hidden Gems of Tamil Folk Music

Paavatkodichchenai is the second village we visited on our journey to uncover Tamil folk singers and their songs. During our visit, we met Yoganathan, the caretaker of a large farm situated far from the residential area, owned by an Australian resident. Yoganathan leads a unique and serene life in a clean and well-organized hut on the farm.

In his early 60s, Yoganathan's memory is astonishing. He recalls and sings numerous folk songs effortlessly, as if the music flows through him like a river. Remarkably, he also knows over 1,000 Tamil cinema songs by heart. Yoganathan is a joyful man with a great sense of humor, and each folk song he sings tells a story, which he narrates with comic flair as he brings the music to life.
