The second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States has concluded in Geneva under the mediation of the Omani Foreign Minister. Led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the negotiations have moved into a technical phase focused on drafting the text of a potential agreement. Both delegations have reached a general understanding on guiding principles, though they acknowledge that significant work remains to bridge the gaps between their positions.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi has engaged in detailed technical discussions with the parties to establish verification protocols. Iran has signaled a willingness to grant the agency access to its nuclear facilities and dilute its stockpile of 60 percent highly enriched uranium in exchange for comprehensive sanctions relief. While Tehran describes the atmosphere as constructive, it continues to assert its right to domestic enrichment for civilian purposes, which remains a sticking point for Western powers.

A major point of contention remains the U.S. and Israeli demand to include Iran's ballistic missile program and its support for regional proxy forces in any final deal. Iranian officials have firmly rejected these broader terms, maintaining that their missile program is a strictly defensive necessity that falls outside the scope of nuclear negotiations. Turkey has also warned that expanding the talks to include missiles could risk stalling the nuclear file or triggering another regional conflict.

These diplomatic efforts are taking place under the shadow of a significant U.S. naval buildup and direct threats of military action from President Donald Trump should negotiations fail. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has responded with defiance, stating that the U.S. will never succeed in toppling the Islamic Republic and suggesting that American warships could face destruction. Domestically, Iran faces intense pressure from a sanctions-driven economic crisis and widespread anti-government protests that have resulted in thousands of arrests.
