Air travel across the world has been disrupted after Airbus urgently recalled nearly 6,000 A320-family aircraft—the world’s most widely used passenger jets, due to a software glitch triggered by solar radiation. The safety scare began after a JetBlue A320 experienced a sudden, uncommented drop mid-flight, injuring several passengers. Airbus traced the issue to a critical flight computer called ELAC, which experts say can malfunction when intense solar activity causes “bit flips,” corrupting flight-control data.
India is one of the worst-affected nations, with more than 200 A320-series aircraft operated by IndiGo and Air India grounded for mandatory software rollbacks and possible hardware replacements. The DGCA has banned affected jets from flying until fully updated, meaning passengers may face delays, cancellations, and longer turnaround times.
Worldwide, airlines from the US to Australia are scrambling to manage disruptions.
