Mumbai Police: Urban Naxal Presence Real and Under Watch
On August 11, a senior Mumbai Police officer stated that the existence of urban Naxals (Left Wing Extremists) “cannot be denied” and that their activities are being closely monitored. He noted that police teams remain on alert, maintaining a strict vigil and taking appropriate action. The remarks came after the Maharashtra legislature passed the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024, aimed at preventing unlawful activities of Left Wing Extremist organisations, with a particular focus on urban Naxalism and “passive militancy,” during the monsoon session. The officer refrained from sharing operational details but emphasised that the term “urban” is self-explanatory and that authorities keep constant watch on their movements.
