Former President Rodrigo R. Duterte has confirmed that he is "generally fine" after undergoing a medical check-up in The Netherlands, ahead of his first appearance before the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday. In a statement released Friday morning, the Philippine Embassy in The Netherlands shared that Duterte reached out to the embassy at around 3 p.m. (Central European Time), informing them of the medical care he received. The embassy noted that Duterte mentioned he had undergone a check-up and was in good health. The embassy is now coordinating with Duterte’s legal team and family members as per his request, and is arranging for a consular visit. A request has already been submitted to the ICC Registry. On March 13, Duterte also had a conversation with his legal counsel, former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea. Currently, Duterte is being held at the ICC detention center and is scheduled to make his initial appearance before the court at 9 p.m. Manila time. Duterte, who served as president from 2016 to 2022, faces charges for alleged involvement in the killings linked to his anti-drug campaign, which led to thousands of deaths of suspected drug dealers and users. He will stand trial for crimes against humanity, with accusations that he oversaw death squads during the crackdown. If convicted, Duterte could become the first former Asian head of state to be tried by the ICC. The arrest warrant accuses him of creating, funding, and arming death squads responsible for these killings.
