Bat flies are very strange ectoparasitic insects. They have no wings, their head and eyes are reduced, and they look like six-legged spiders, sucking bat blood and spending their almost entire life on the host bat. Their strangeness is not limited to the appearance: they have a uterus inside their body and nurture their young with milk, their larvae pupate immediately after being laid, and they have special cells and organs for symbiotic bacteria. Here, we deliver an easy-to-understand visual introduction to bat fly's unique biology, coevolution with symbiotic bacteria, relationship to the host bats, etc.,, with a lot of fascinating images and movies.
