Murshidabad’s Berhampore city celebrated Diwali with lights, joy — and a dangerous dose of pollution. As fireworks lit up the night sky, toxic smoke filled the air, turning celebration into suffocation.

At midnight on October 21, Berhampore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 192, far above the safe limit of 150. Even on Monday evening, AQI remained at 174. Environmental activists expressed concern, saying despite repeated awareness drives, few listen. They are demanding stricter government action to curb harmful firecrackers.

Experts warn that an AQI nearing 200 poses serious health risks. On October 22, fireworks continued late into the night — the AQI reached 172 by midnight and stayed “unhealthy” through Thursday morning.

The toxic air is affecting not just people but also street animals and birds. Children and the elderly are particularly at risk. Environmental and science activists caution that this festive joy may turn life-threatening if awareness and action are not taken.
