Poisoning
“Poisoning means intake of toxic dose of any substance.”
Which may be any chemical or drug

Fact From Which The Poisoning Can Be Ascertained:
1. History
2. Physical Examination/Clinical Assessment
3. Laboratory Investigations
4. Therapeutic trials
5. Analysis of body fluids or tissues

Analysis of body fluids or tissues is called Analytical Toxicology

What is Analytical Toxicology?

It is the scientific study of detecting and identifying presence of drugs, poisons or any chemicals in body fluids, tissues , organs .

You have to detect the chemical which is not the normal constituent of body,
And that too in it’s is in Toxic level. Only then we can say Poisoning has occurred
Types of Poisoning
1. Animal Poisoning
2. Human Poisoning

HUMAN POISONING

Suicidal Poisoning
This is self killing by poison and for this many poisons can be used,
Cyanide, Opium, Barbiturates, Organophosphorus and Other Insecticides
Suicidal Poisoning
It is self killing by poisons and for this many poisons are used e.g.; Cyanide, Opium, Barbiturates, Organo -phosphorus and other insecticides.

Homicidal Poisoning
This is killing of other person by poisoning, and poison can be
Arsenic, Lead, Aconite, Cyanide and Organophosphorus Compounds

Homicidal Poisoning
It is to kill other person and poisons used for this commonly are Arsenic, Aconite, Organo -phosphorus, etc.,

Stupefying Poisoning
They are used for the purpose of Robbery or any other assault
They are called Road Poisons or Rail Road Poisons
Persons becomes disoriented, confused, vertigo, vomiting.
Commonly used poisons for this purpose are Dhatura, Belladonna, Hyoscymus, Cannabis indicia, etc.
Commonly given in sweets and candies.
Chloral hydrate is a liquid & is also given in beverages, and are known as, “knock-out drops”
Usually given in liquids like: Soft Drinks and Juices

Accidental Poisoning
This is poisoning by carelessness, where the poisonous and non-poisonous compounds are stored together

Poisonous Plants
Generally Poisoning is one of the leading causes of accidental deaths in children.
There is another group of victims who die each year from Accidental Un-reported Poisoning,

Like the victim may have taken a medicine which caused drowsiness while driving
and caused a serious accident and cause of death was reported as Road-traffic accident.
Similarly the person working in a closed space with a gasoline engine running and inhaled large quantity of CO,
after few hours collapsed of apparent “Heart Attack” and blood was never tested for CO.
Precaution
So many people poisoned each year but their symptoms simulating some natural diseases
and because of life saving first aid and quick hospitalization survive and,
The actual cause remains un-noticed.
