(28 Oct 1969) RR6943: PORTUGAL: ONE YEAR AFTER SALAZAR

For two generations Salazar kept Portugal as a
changeless society, aloof from Europe and the world.
Dr. Caetano came to office with the reputation of a
liberal and gave rise to hopes that some of the
harsher restrictions of the Salazar regime would be
relaxed. He moved slowly and carefully during his
first year, but there were unmistakable signs that the
political climate in Portugal was changing. Opposition
leaders were allowed to return from exile to fight
elections for the National Assembly; the
activities of the political police were curtailed;
and there was a free and open discussion of
Government policies in the press. The camera team
followed the election campaign and brought back a
report on conditions in Portugal one year after
Salazar.
