Ever since 2015 with the release of The Force Awakens, every studio that owns even the slightest bit of nostalgic IP is concocting ways in which they can leverage it for profit by way of the legacy sequel. So many of these films are made to stroke the ego of their predecessors filled with empty callbacks and easter eggs instead of furthering the characters and themes and, most importantly, making a good film that necessitates its existence rather than selling nostalgia as a product. While a truly GOOD legacy sequel is rare, Lana Wachowski's The Matrix Resurrections or The Matrix 4 came along and challenged the very nature of what studios, corporations, and even audiences are comfortable with, in the age of unoriginality in blockbuster entertainment. In so doing, Wachowski crafted one of the smartest blockbusters of the decade that comments on an evolving system seeking to control us by means of comfort, desire, emotions, feelings, our complacency as a cog in the machine, and how it affects the most vulnerable of us the most, specifically, those in grief. Matrix Resurrections is a great movie that brought back sincerity, love, brains, and craft to tentpole filmmaking; it's the anti legacy sequel we all needed and the template for how studios should approach franchise filmmaking of this caliber going forward. While yes, the new Matrix movie won't be for everyone, it's nice to see a film with something to say that continues on the themes presented in the original while not trying to recreate the original.
