1. The duration of ECMO support varies. A patient with reversible heart failure may need it for just 2–3 days, while someone with severe viral pneumonia progressing to ARDS might require 2–3 weeks. The exact duration depends on whether ECMO is used for heart or lung support.

2. ECMO is also widely used in children. In fact, it was first applied in paediatric cases, where it showed excellent outcomes before being extended to adults. Certain newborn and paediatric conditions still show particularly high survival rates with ECMO.

3. It’s important to note that ECMO doesn’t cure disease; it’s a support system. It buys time for the patient’s lungs or heart to recover while ongoing treatments take effect. In essence, ECMO sustains life long enough for medicines and the body’s healing process to work.
