Twelfth Prospects (Billy Bell)

Billy Bell (1862 – 1941) was a prolific poet in Redesdale, Northumberland England, and was known locally as – reasonably enough – The Redesdale Poet

This poem imagines the thoughts of a mother grouse at the start of the red grouse shooting season in the UK every year on 12 August, the so-called ‘glorious twelfth.’ Red grouse and ptarmigan can be legally transformed into expanding clouds of blood, bones, feathers, entrails and lead pellets until today, 10 December, when the season closes and the grouse mothers have one worry fewer until next year
